Two months after the outbreak of World War II, sixty Polish Jewish writers and journalists, having fled from Poland to Vilnius by train, formed a committee to document the destruction of Jewish communities since September 1939. It was likely the earliest Jewish historical commission in Eastern Europe to begin its work in the shadow of German occupation. This study is the first to examine the "Committee to Collect Material about the Destruction of Jewish Communities in Poland 1939.” The six bulletins from its collection are published here in German translation.

It was awarded the Hosenfeld/Szpilman Memorial Award in 2017.
